Jurgen Klopp is in danger of becoming English football management’s next ‘nearly’ man, a position vacated by former Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger.

Like Wenger, Klopp has lost a Champions League final with an English side.

Like Wenger, Klopp has lost a Europa League (formerly UEFA Cup) final with an English side.

Like Wenger, Klopp has lost a League Cup final.

And like Wenger did on several occasions, the German could be set to surrender a title lead and ultimately finish second to a team from Manchester.

It was a pattern which prompted Jose Mourinho to deem Wenger, perhaps harshly, a ‘specialist in failure’.

It all started so well Wenger in England, and one could argue that life in Liverpool has been encouraging for Klopp, who has transformed Liverpool into contenders on all fronts, or simply made them second best, depending on what way you look at it.

Yet unlike Wenger, Klopp has failed to get to grips with the FA Cup.

After being knocked out of the tournament by Wolves on Monday, Liverpool are now evens (1/1) with 888Sport to finish the season without a trophy.

Despite sitting four points clear at the top of the Premier League, the online bookmakers are mindful that the Reds could be doomed to failure this year.

Betting On Liverpool’s Fortunes

From a punter’s perspective, it’s hard not to be tempted by those 1/1 odds, with the very real prospect of Liverpool winning no silverware an opportunity to double your money.

Liverpool’s shock 2-1 defeat to Wolves in the cup came just three days after their unbeaten start to the Premier League season came to an end against Manchester City.

And with their centre-backs dropping like flies to boot, the Reds also face a difficult tie in the Champions League round of 16, with German giants Bayern Munich lying in wait next month.

Their campaign is in danger of turning into an old school Arsenal (Wenger) season, whereby everything is going swimmingly until the new year, only for the lot to turn to dust in January and February.

All of a sudden, after back-to-back defeats, a long trip south to Brighton this Saturday looks a little tricky too, and the Seagulls look a massive price at 10/1 to win (Ladbrokes), or 13/5 to take points off Liverpool by any means in the Double Chance market.

But for the first time this season, in the league at least, there is doubt surrounding Liverpool, and where there’s doubt there’s betting value.

The Reds are still 4/5 favourites to win the Premier League, but their next two outings – a home visit from Crystal Palace after Brighton away – could determine whether they get back on their feet, or crumble.

That makes Man City’s current odds of 7/5 to win the title quite appealing, but with Tottenham still in contention in a three-horse race, the better value is to back Liverpool to finish up empty-handed at 1/1.

For the more optimistic of Liverpool fans, 888Sport price Liverpool at 9/1 to win the Champions League, while winning both the league and the European Cup is available at 17/1.
